Shooting at the Beach

— 06/05/2015 by Monika Wertman —

In the middle of May I had the pleasure to work with some fabulous models in Miami on the beach. It was a very fun experience and very intense. Not only did we have fantastic models to work with, but had a wardrobe stylist from Vogue and a hair and make-up stylist from Vogue as well. We worked in sweltering heat and humidity and did so for 7 plus hours.

It was very rewarding in many ways. The exposure to that level of prep work on the part of the behind the scenes stylists and the composure of the set directions lead to some wonderful imagery. It was fun to work with models who did not need much direction and to have the freedom to direct them to do things I do not often get the chance to do with my clients.

I was exposed to different lighting techniques, like manipulating sunlight instead of overpowering it with strobes, creating shade and bouncing light back onto my subjects, that I have already implemented with one of my brides and intend to use with my seniors this summer. It takes a team of four to accomplish this feat, but is well worth it as you can see from the images within this post.

The take-away is that you may hire me to work with you on any beach of your choice, if travel is required, additional fees apply, but here in Maryland we have a few lakes these techniques can be used at, and in fact, this technique is handy in various situations.

Tyler’s Lacrosse Game

— 05/21/2015 by Monika Wertman —

Had someone told me a couple of years ago that I would start shooting sports images and sporting events, I would have laughed, but somehow I started with it sometime last year and rather enjoy it. There is excitement capturing a game as a spectator. My first experience doing just that was earlier this year when I recorded the legends basket ball game between North and South Highschool. It was fast moving and exciting to capture baskets being made and wins being scored. That game will be featured in the new publication of XLSports Magazine in the July issue.

I then was asked by one of my favorite clients if I could come and shoot her son’s lacrosse game. We had a somewhat cool, but sunny day for it and it was a lot of fun being close to the game, following her son Tyler around with the lens. Even though this is a middle school team, they played very well, pushed for their scores and even got aggressive enough with each other to make the time fly.lacrosse game hagerstown md             wertman photography tyler lacrosse game-4 lacrosse game hagerstown md

I got some great shots of the action and a few close ups of Tyler during half time, listening to his coaches strategize. Tyler’s mom was thrilled and told me that her son felt like a rock star with me there recording his efforts. He scored several goals during the game, all of which I captured. The images have been compiled into a cool memory book for Tyler that he will be able to look at over and over again and one of the pictures showcased within this blog is on it’s way to my studio printed on metal right now.

Here at Wertman Photography, we will do sports sessions that can be styled as an extreme sports session, a portrait session in all the gear, or like the one I am describing here, as a sporting event. We will work with any age and session fees depend on what you hire us for. In any case, we will have fun recording it all for you.

Please feel free to browse our galleries to see some recent additions in the modeling, boudoir and children’s sections.wertman photography tyler lacrosse game-1

RN Graduate Joshua

Just recently I had the privilege to photograph a college RN Graduate from Hagerstown Community College.  When we discussed what he wanted to get out of his session, he told me that he did not get senior pictures in High School and would love to capture similar photos now.  I immediately thought of how much fun it would be if we could gain access to the nursing program classrooms and create some fun images there.  I made the suggestion and Joshua liked the idea as he is passionate about his chosen field of study.

After a bit of a scheduling struggle we were allowed into the unit and were able to play with the life-size robots and reenact some things an RN does on a regular basis.  wertman photography-Joshua Dingle-Nursing graduate-1

We had a beautiful day the day of the session, and were also able to capture some shots around campus in some favorite spots.

Usually when my clients think of senior pictures, they think of the high school variety, but either repeating the experience at the end of college or creating it for the first time is a valid and fun option.  Being allowed into the nursing unit at HCC offered some great opportunities to not only see the state of the art facility that has recently won some awards, but also get a glimpse at the rigorous program aspiring nurses such as Joshua undergo.

I was able to capture Joshua’s personality in a setting he loves which led to some wonderful shots outdoors in his suit as well.  Please look over some of my favorites from that session and remember that Wertman Photography will go anywhere you want us to shoot.  Different locations are fun and intriguing and one of our favorite things to explore.

Please explore our entire website for other fun locations we have taken our clients to for ideas and inspiration.  They can be found in any of the galleries or other blog posts.

Corporate Event at Kemp Mill Road

— 04/27/2015 by Monika Wertman —

corporate event

Last week I had a last minute request to cover an induction/unveiling ceremony of a brand new addition to our county, a solar field. This was an assignment I can classify as an event, as it was a corporate event for all parties involved in the project, one being Northern Energy and Power and their partners, and Washington County being the other.

I arrived about 15 minutes before it was supposed to start and was treated like a queen. They drove me out to the site that the induction was to take place and gave me the chance to capture some great images of the solar panel site with wonderful stormy clouds on the horizon. According to the weather forecast, rain and windy conditions would arrive within the hour, creating skies a photographer dreams of.

After my stint of solidarity came to an end, guests to the event started to arrive and the show got underway.

Speeches were held and having been told that I was in charge, I took up front row presence and got all of the important shots. True to the forecast, the storm arrived just after the ribbon cutting and lunch was served in very close quarters under a tent, surrounded by whipping winds and slashing rain.

This lasted for a while and once the winds slowed down, I was able to move around a get a few “party shots” without risking my equipment getting wet.

The purpose of the telling of this story is that no matter what, we will get the shots we were hired to do. Be it for a corporate event such as a ribbon cutting for a new venture, a corporate party set indoors and celebrating a year of good profits, to a birthday celebration or special anniversary, you can count on Wertman Photography to cover your special event well and thoroughly.

Shooting an Engagement Session on Location, Steph and Justin

— 04/17/2015 by Monika Wertman —

A couple of weekends ago I met with a cute couple in Gettysburg, PA to shoot their engagement session. We decided on this particular location for two reasons:

1. They live in Lancaster, PA, about 2.5 hours from my studio, Gettysburg was about halfway for both of us, and

2. Justin is a Civil War buff, so this rustic location fit the bill.

I scouted out a couple of neat spots to shoot at with the first one being at Trostle Farm, a building that saw a good amount of fighting and had the rustic fencing and wonderful tree lines and rocky areas that make for a wonderful backdrop for engagement photos. It was a windy, but sunny day and we got some really cute shots.

On our way to the second scouted location, Devil’s Den, we stopped by some cannons and another farm, the latter owning some white picket fencing that could not be passed up.

Devil’s Den is a wonderful rocky outcrop, heavily visited by tourists, but I managed to find some spots that allowed us privacy. The sunny sky and puffy clouds enabled me to get some great shots of silhouettes of my couple and some nice contrast shots as well.

We had a lot of fun shooting in this unique location, being able to incorporate interests of the groom with the added bonus of giving Steph and Justin some ideas for their honeymoon, because as we talked, I found out that Gettysburg was the destination!

Please look below to see some of the great shots we got!
